Tutoring Your Child

by Elizabeth Hamilton, M.Ed.

Tutoring your own child can be a difficult task. Children can be uncooperative and very sensitive and parents can get impatient. Here are some tips to help smooth the way:
  1. Let your child know that his teacher says that he needs extra help in, say, Reading. Tell him that you want to help.

  2. When tutoring, sit next to your child rather than across from him.

  3. Give directions slowly. Many children have difficulty following directions. To check for understanding, have your child repeat the directions back to you.

  4. Have your child look at you when you talk. It's easier for you to see if your child is having difficulty understanding what you are saying.

  5. Work through one step/problem/paragraph at a time.

  6. If your child doesn't know what to do, show and/or tell him.

  7. Be patient.

  8. Praise your child often.
